Child Protection
Note from a Child Protection Consultant
As part of developing TASSEL’s formal Child Protection Policy, I visited all of TASSEL’s sites as well as conducted focus groups with the local Cambodian children; their parents; international volunteers under age 18; the under-18 volunteers’ parents; international adult volunteers; Cambodian teachers; and management.
TASSEL already had many good safety practices in place, especially in the area of recruitment as well as code of conduct and communication regulations, classroom regulations, and summer trip
arrangements. There was a genuine good environment where students enjoyed their
communication and learning with the TASSEL adults. All under-18 children and volunteers as well as adults felt trusted and cared for. They felt safe. Not one had any negative experience attending TASSEL activities. Similarly, adult volunteers and student parents never felt their children were exposed to safety issues when attending TASSEL activities.
TASSEL is committed to child safe practices and all Khmer teachers enthusiastically participated in my two-day training session on the newly developed Child Protection Policy. With this in place I am confident TASSEL will continue serving the children in a child safe environment.
